Applying to Texas A&M as a Tranfer Student
This isn’t anything major – just a little post on Sunday to keep things rolling for me. Recently I’ve been trying to find out about getting into Texas A&M University as a transfer student. Admittedly I don’t have the best academic record in higher education but that is not what makes me a good candidate for a student. I have plenty of real world experience in the IT industry, I’ve been a leader in user groups and peer knowledge sharing, and I push the envelop when it comes to making things possible with technology.
The prospective student center at A&M was very helpful in giving me a clear idea of what I need to do and helping to deal with some paperwork. I then visited or spoke to advisers for the colleges of engineering, business, and agriculture sciences. Based on my conversations with these folks, my most likely option is either the Computer Science program in the College of Engineering, or the Spatial Sciences program in the College of Agriculture. The most ironic thing in this whole journey is that the adviser from the college least likely to accept me – Mays Business School – was the most helpful by far. Kudos to Mays for having excellent advisers!
I would prefer to finish my business degree as I think that would make me more well rounded for my career and life goals. However, the requirements for transfer students are very tough and competitive. Computer science would likely be the best fit for my current knowledge base but I’m divided as to whether I want to stay a code monkey the rest of my life or go into management. And finally, the Ag spatial sciences program is a fairly new program and likely crosses with a lot of the technology I’m interested in (GPS, GIS, mapping, etc) or have used in the past.
Right now it’s looking like I need to take Calculus I to get my GPA up to standards and make my transcript more appealing to the science related colleges. Then I can apply to the colleges I want to get into and hopefully someone will take me.
